If you’re a fan of self-tanning at home and fall into the don’t-have-time-for-anything-too-complicated category (erm, all of us?) nailing that gorgeous, natural-looking glow without being left with patches and a whole heap of mess can seem impossible.

And yet, some of our favourite celebs seemed to have nailed the bronze goddess vibes at home during lockdown with total ease (Kate Middleton, we’re looking at you), showing off a just-back-from-the-Med glow when the professionals were strictly off limits. So, how do they actually get that streak-free finish every. Single. Time? This is intel we are totally here for.

Luckily for us, facialist and tanning guru Michaella Bolder (who’s worked with everyone from Naomie Harris and Elle Macpherson to the Strictly Come Dancing gang and Henry Holland’s show at London Fashion Week) agreed to share some of her tanning secrets with GLAMOUR, including the products she recommends to her famous clients and the tips and tricks for mastering a perfect application at home like a pro.

“For me, the St.Tropez Self Tan Classic Bronzing Mousse is by far the most legendary self-tanning solution – I call it one of my hero products because of its simple and easy application with a reliable glowing result,” says Michaella. “It’s perfect for every skin type and creates a healthy-looking natural glow after eight hours that’s perfectly wearable during the day but also dries fast enough to sleep comfortably in. This is a great staple for those wanting an effortless medium enhanced glow to the skin and one for beginners or nervous tanners because of its foolproof and lightweight formula.”

Can a tanning facial serum really provide superior skincare? This one can…

Another of her go-to fake tanning products? St.Tropez Self Tan Express Bronzing Mousse. “It was a complete sell-out at launch because it’s completely customisable which everyone loves; it creates a gorgeous, light glow in just one hour, a medium tan in two hours and a deeper rich tan after three hours,” says Bolder. “This solution is the same as the Classic tan, but is the answer for those with super busy lives wanting a fast-acting tan without the need to sleep in it.” Michaella says the Express Mousse is ideal “as a solution for brides, a last minute night out or lunch date, or simply those wanting a richer tan result without waiting eight hours for it to develop.”

Looking to add some self-tanning into your skincare routine? Michaella recommends the St.Tropez Self Tan Purity Vitamins Bronzing Water Face Serum. “If you’re looking for a natural glow on the face, this is a self-tan specifically targeted for this with incredible skincare benefits too. I love recommending this product to my clients because it’s so easy to use, doesn’t block pores or transfer and can be added to your usual skincare regime or in place of your serum.”

She adds, “The serum contains a hyaluronic acid blend to plump the skin and boost your hydration levels long term, a dose of vitamin C for a radiance hit, vitamin D stimulators for skin health and peach extract for antioxidant properties. Plus, it has a gorgeous light tropical fragrance reminding us of the perfect summer holiday (minus the harmful UV damage!).

“The great thing about this product is that it’s not just a self-tanning serum, it offers daily hydration and is perfect for continued use and a buildable glow that lasts for days, plus it can be used as a primer or over your makeup.”
