Maulana Abul Kalam Azad birth anniversary, 11 November, is celebrated annually as the National Education Day in India. He was the first Education Minister of Independent India. The day focuses on the promotion of education for women, free education for the poor and compulsory education for the masses.

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Biography 

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad is commonly referred to as Maulana Azad, wherein, Maulana means “Our Mater” and Azad means “free” was adopted as the pen name. He was born in 1888 on November 11 in Mecca, now part of Saudi Arabia.  He was a self-taught individual and mastered many languages, that includes- Arabic, Bengali, English, Persian and Hindustani. He wrote articles in many Urdu magazines and Journals, namely- Ahsanul, Akhbar, Khadang-e-Nazar and Makhzan. In 1912, he published an Urdu newspaper called Al-Hilal from Calcutta espousing the ideas of Nationalism, for encouraging young Muslims for Hindu-Muslim unity and the Independence. He was also a founding member of Anjuman-i-Ulama-i-Bangala in 1913 and helped in the improvement of the relationship between Hindus and Muslims of Bengal. He served as the first Education Minister after India gained independence from August 15, 1947, till February 02, 1958.maulana abul kalam azad

In 2008, the Ministry of Human Resource Development announced the celebration of 11 November, the birth date of the great son of India- Maulana Azad, as National Education Day for recalling his contributions in the field of education in India.

Mentioned below are the contributions made by Maulana Azad that has played a crucial role in the improvement of the education system of India:

  1. He advocated for the right of women’s primary and secondary education.
  2. He fought for free and compulsory primary education for children up to the age of 14 years.
  3. Establishment of IISc, School of Architecture and Planning, Jamia Millia Islamia, and IIT Kharagpur.
  4. He laid the foundations of Sangeet Natak Akademi, Sahitya Akademi, and Lalit Kala Akademi for promotion of culture and education in India.
  5. He set up important boards and commissions, which includes- University Grants Commission, the All India Council for Technical Education, the Kharagpur Institute of Higher Education, the University Education Commission and the Secondary Education Commission.

For the commendable contributions as an Educationist and a Freedom Fighter, Maulana Azad was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1992.

Education Day is celebrated nationwide to cherish the idea of Nation Building.
