Program Description

The certificate in ceramics offers students not seeking the more intensive BFA in art with an emphasis in ceramics the opportunity to complement their degree with a series of courses focused on ceramics. Students gain greater experience in and practical knowledge of the common materials and techniques for ceramics.

Learning Outcomes

Successful graduates with the ceramics certificate will be able to:

  • Demonstrate technical proficiency in handbuilding and wheelthrowing processes, glaze application and formulation and knowledge of kiln theory.
  • Use clay-building and three-dimensional design skills to design and construct utilitarian, functional and sculptural ceramic work.
  • Conceive and produce authentic ceramic work.

Certificate Requirements

Core Courses (9 hours)

  • ART 2530 Ceramics: Space (3 hours)
  • ART 2540 Ceramics: Form and Design (3 hours)
  • One ARHS course chosen from the following:
    • ARHS 2210 Intercultural History of Art (3 hours)
    • ARHS 2200 Current Art (3 hours)
    • ARHS 4600 Topics in Art History: Art, Craft, Object, Image

Additional Requirements (6 credits)

Choose from the following:

  • ART 3050 Topics in Studio Art (if topic is focused in ceramics) (3 hours)
  • ART 3530 Investigations in Ceramics (3-6 hours)
  • ART 3540 Ceramics Materials and Technology (3 hours)
  • ART 4530 Focus in Ceramics (3 hours)
